Letting Go was the first micro-documentary that I made during the Blindsighted project. Marian was a delightfully game subject. I presume that her background in musical theatre and composing helped her engage the project in a remarkably available and dynamic way.
She had come into the initial interview with Craig having thought very carefully about the questions he had given her in advance. As a result, her answers connected to each other and to a deep sense of meaning that gave me, as a filmmaker, a wealth of possible stories that could be told.
It would have been easy for me to keep unfolding Marian’s story into larger and larger stories about her life and really how her experiences had helped her become so fully human.
I wonder, too, if the story that I ultimately told about her — a story about all of the Letting Go that midlife had demanded of her — connected with the ways I was moving into middle age.
